It is controversial whether vocational basic and continuing education is substitutable or complementary. This report approaches the issue from an entrepreneurial perspective with a special focus on company sizes and provides empirical results on the basis of the IAB-Betriebspanel (representative employer survey). The valuations of a bivariate probit model also indicate the dependency of complementary and substitutional correlations on the individual company size.
Equality of professional and academic education? Results of comparisons according to the “Oldenburger Anrechnungsmodell” It is intended to strengthen the permeability of the educational system by taking into account professional qualifications for academic studies. The article describes an appropriate instrument, developed as a model project, to measure levels of learning units which is being used for comparisons between professional and academic qualifications.
The authors explain their model of transferring self-directed learning elements from the context of projects to their daily work as adult education teachers in the Volkshochschule des Landkreises Gießen (adult education school). They focus on usability and investigate the learners' view on self-directed learning. Their results: If resources are used wisely, the implementation of self-directed learning is possible and learners appreciate it.

Zur vertieften Klärung dieses bislang übersehenen und doch fundamentalen Themas gibt es keinen besseren Anlass als das Jubiläum zum 20-jährigen Erscheinen einer Zeitschrift, die die Bildung der Erwachsenen im Namen führt. Wie es scheint, ist die Suche nach dem Erwachsenen auch mit dieser Ausgabe nicht gänzlich erledigt.
This article adopts the PISA study’s staged competence model in the area of football. The authors specify five levels of competency in football literacy to serve as the basis for an adult education curriculum. The motivation for the study is the staging of the World Cup in a country which was the loser in the PISA study: Germany. The general public should be knowledgeable at least when it comes to football.
On the occasion of the passing of the North Rhine-Westphalian budget for 2004/2005 the author takes a close look at the Land’s support of adult education. From the viewpoint of a Catholic association he draws a dark picture of financial means continuously on the decrease that gives rise to the impression that the constitutionally guaranteed promotion of adult education is a model up for discontinuation.
Similar to the literary cafés there is the model of “philosophical cafés”. It first came into being in France in 1992 by M. Sautet. By now it is also recited by adult education. It is based on the statement “All people are philosophers“ and it animates a daily routine of philosophical discussions. With the example of the theme “joy“, the author sketches his experiences as a manager of such a café.
