The study Competencies in Later Life (CiLL) provides, for the first time, information about central basic competencies of older adults. In doing so, two research approaches are combined. First, CiLL extends the OECD Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) to the age group 66 to 80 and analyses correlations between socio-demographic factors and basic competencies assessed with the PIAAC instrument. Der österreichische Nationalökonom und Wissenschaftstheoretiker Otto Neurath ist insbesondere durch seine Arbeiten an bildpädagogischen Visualisierungen von Wissen und Wissenschaft bekannt geworden. Sie sind bekannt als Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik bzw. später Isotype („International System of Typographic Picture Education“).
Im vorliegenden Heft werden in gebotener Kürze einige neuere Ansätze und Ergebnisse der Teilnahme- und Motivationsforschung in der Weiterbildung vorgestellt. Die Zahl der Forschungsarbeiten zum Thema ist insgesamt begrenzt, auch wenn es noch einige weitere Arbeiten außer den hier präsentierten gibt: Teilnahme-, Beteiligungs- und Motivationsforschung sind in der Regel empirisch aufwändige und teure Verfahren. Umso wichtiger ist es, dass hier durchaus neuere, interessante Ergebnisse vorliegen.

Oscar Olsson war einer der treibenden Kräfte beim Aufbau von Study Circle in Schweden Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Diese richteten sich an die ärmere Landbevölkerung und Arbeiter. Historisch waren die Study Circle eng mit den Prinzipien der „Popular Education“ in sozialen Bewegungen, insbesondere der Arbeiterbewegung, verbunden.
