Im 18. Jahrhundert waren die Debating Clubs weit verbreitet und es durfte, unabhängig vom Geschlecht, jeder, der wollte, teilnehmen. Die meisten Mitglieder gehörten jedoch der neu entstandenen Mittelschicht an. Ein berühmter Vorläufer der Debating-Clubs war der Rota Club in London.
