The author pursues the issue whether gender equity has been achieved in continuing educational participation. According to Friebel, this question can only be answered if the life and work contexts are considered as a biographic regulative of the participation in continuing education. The underlying empirical data is based on the longitudinal study »Hamburger Biografie- und Lebenslaufpanel« (HBLP), in which findings about the correlation of gender, parenthood and participation in continuing educ…
Very old people in particular live in a »mode of bidding farewell«. The »dictates of death« gains increasing importance in this phase of life compared to the »dictates of life«. The author shows how activation and a resource-oriented approach can even help persons suffering from dementia or dying persons to experience their existence as something that they can actively shape. This yields important educational insight in the training of medical specialists, voluntary workers and family members.
Current Aspects of Professional Qualification Consultancy for Companies Professional counselling has to pick up the thread of the real-life in-house training in order to provide companies with efficient counselling services. In…
People with low literacy skills are often experiencing difficulties to manage their everyday life. For example, filling out forms, correspondence or banking may pose huge challenges. But what about the political participation of functional illiterates in a society which is dominated by the use of literacy? The following article focuses on how participants of literacy classes use their possibilities of contribution. These assumptions are based on first results of the qualitative research project…
Tendencies towards individualization have led to a pluralization of situations, phases and styles of living. Disengagement with reference to course participants manifests itself in the diversification of the group of course participants as far as their life situation (vertical disengagement), life phase (temporal disengagement) and style of living (horizontal disengagement) are concerned. The concept of social milieus as an integrative approach can represent tendencies of liberation and can a…
Education or competence – a pseudo alternative? It is a platitude that the structural change of society also leads to structural problems of further education. Therefore this is discusses intensively for some time past and the practical transpositions are gross. The impression of the authors is that it is argued, latently or explicitly, dichothomic even though that in fact is not necessary. In this contribution the authors want to expand on two such contradiction theorems with the intention …
In view of the demographic change the investments in education for elderly population are becoming increasingly more important. At the same time the educational system’s endeavours of repair are rather targeted at the very young. How can the educational investments be divided usefully between the old and the young? By showing examples of Scandinavian countries, the author elucidates a double strategy of high educational investments for the phase of youth and in adult life. The countries have su…
The report focuses on empirical data of cultural life from a cultural political perspective. Despite the common experience of growth, a significant increase of cultural life participation cannot be empirically verified with regard to the time budgets applied – at least not of provisions attributed to the narrower definition of culture. There are more visits (especially of large cultural institutions and popular cultural events) but not necessarily more visitors. While the prerequisites for cult…
From 1992 to 2007 a considerable amount of German and EU funding was put into development projects described as “Qualification Development Management” (German acronym: QUEM) and aimed to support the quality of vocational qualification structures in the former GDR. QUEM was sponsored by the ABWF (Study Group for Corporate Continuing Education Research). In this article the author, a scientist working on QUEM, sums up the activities in the programmes and projects which were funded. He identifies …
