When crediting non-university previous achievements in higher education courses, the term “professional competence” is often used. However, the results of the 2014 “AnHoSt study” and the 2016 “Anrechnungsmonitor” show that the crediting procedures at German HEIs have so far mainly related to formal qualifications, but not to competences acquired in non-formal or informal learning contexts. Even individual crediting procedures are generally based on the formal curricula of apprenticeship and fur…
This article acknowledges Hattie’s Meta-Study »Visible Learning« from a practical perspective, particularly from the continuing educational perspective of adult educators. The author regards Hattie’s findings on the learning effectiveness of instructors as particularly compatible. »Excellent instructors« are aware of their educational activities and adjust their actions to the logic of learning. In this report, three different methods to approach Howard Gardner‘s »Five Minds for the Future« are revealed, which are each a connecting factor to adult education. Tendencies towards individualization have led to a pluralization of situations, phases and styles of living. Disengagement with reference to course participants manifests itself in the diversification of the group of course participants as far as their life situation (vertical disengagement), life phase (temporal disengagement) and style of living (horizontal disengagement) are concerned. The concept of social milieus as an integrative approach can represent tendencies of liberation and can a…

It is a technique meant to shed light on a common problematic situation, to generate visions about the future, and to discuss how these visions can be realised. The paper describes the origin of the method. The methodological steps (phases) of the method are explained and in the second part there is a discussion of the strengths and weakness of the approach gu…
While belief research has become an integral part of the educational research agenda, it has been uneven. One neglected area is the beliefs of adult education teachers. Focusing on five such teachers working in adult basic education and teaching numeracy in Switzerland, this exploratory study uses different data to describe their beliefs about numeracy and its teaching. It is shown that this group holds clearly different views from other groups of adult teachers and it is argued that extending …
