Dietrich, Stephan; Herr, Monika: Organisational development and new learning cultures The theme “new teaching and learning cultures” is a thematic focus in the professional discourse of adult education for a few years already. One consequence of the hightened attention is an increasingly differentiated understanding of what can be regarded as the ”new teaching and learning cultures”. It can be observed that the treatment of the theme does not allow a restriction on the questions of didactics…
The author traces the change in paradigm in educational policy from the perspective of the Ministry in charge as a »fundamental empirical change«. It shows structures and framework conditions underlying pertinent major projects (National Educational Panel, technology-based testing, the Programme for Empirical Educational Research) and draws attention to the output and competence orientation as their “leitmotif”. By the same token it views educational policy and educational research as being dep…
Cartoons are media of political and cultural education. By exaggeration they point out existing problems, asking for action and solutions. In this article some cartoons are presented as examples, dealing with the problem of illiteracy and the task of reading, followed by an interpretation regarding the pedagogical impact. The role of cartoons in an educational context is valued, more research on the topic is proposed.

The article depicts a structural model of health competences consisting of basic and developed skills, which refer to a perceptive-motivational as well as activity-based level. As a contrast to health literacy, the model is detached from the clinical context and intended as a life competence for health. The article also focuses on the empirical model review as well as on the issue of how to acquire competences.
The author has collected self-reports of functional illiterates and questioned them on their “joy potential“. Three qualitatively set up analyses of the 1990s serve as sources. The contribution shows that the participation in literacy courses can cause a significant increase of self-confidence by overcoming experiences of deficit. The experience of attention and support is seen as encouraging and it contributes considerably to take over responsibility for one’s own life.
The demographic change and the growing demand of skilled workers in Germany puts workers with migration background in the focus of interest in politics, economy, research and, increasingly, of adult education. The following article analyses empirically the relationship between the socio-cultural determinants, which are theoretically embedded in Esser’s model of social integration, and the participation in further vocational education of working adults with a migration background in Germany on t…
Adult education as a profession is neither clearly defined in relation to neighbouring fields nor clearly structured internally. Thus an ambivalent situation is created: on the one hand there are careers on this side and beyond institutionalised adult education. On the other hand the commitment towards a professional purpose seen as pedagogical in a narrow sense begins to crumble. The author refers to a speech by W. Schulenberg from 1969 and shows perspectives for the profession. They aim at a …
