Im vorliegenden Heft werden in gebotener Kürze einige neuere Ansätze und Ergebnisse der Teilnahme- und Motivationsforschung in der Weiterbildung vorgestellt. Die Zahl der Forschungsarbeiten zum Thema ist insgesamt begrenzt, auch wenn es noch einige weitere Arbeiten außer den hier präsentierten gibt: Teilnahme-, Beteiligungs- und Motivationsforschung sind in der Regel empirisch aufwändige und teure Verfahren. Umso wichtiger ist es, dass hier durchaus neuere, interessante Ergebnisse vorliegen.

In der Weiterbildungswissenschaft hat sich eine Hinwendung zur empirischen Forschung vollzogen. Dadurch werden immer wieder neue und neuartige Fragestellungen an die Empirie herangetragen. In allen Beiträgen werden forschungsmethodische Aspekte im Hinblick auf weiterbildungswissenschaftliche Fragestellungen thematisiert. Der Aufschwung des Themas „Alphabetisierung und Grundbildung“ hält ungebrochen an.
