Religion, ethics and adult education Religion and ethics serve as a relevant topic in various contexts of adult education, be it as a challenge for self-reflection or as point of departure in public debate. This issue will address various aspects bringing together academic discourse and practical work. The authors will in particular focus on social issues.
The paratext of biographical interviews This article profiles everything which the biography researcher intentionally prompts or unintentionally receives during field work from his interview partners in the way of “paratext” which contributes to the design of the subject of research. Thus a notion which is usually used in the field of literature science is in this manner adopted in biographical research.
Case studies The contribution describes principles and possible yields for the implementation of case studies in the area of adult education. The research practical implementation itself is deliniated with an example from a research project from the area of learning research. Amplified are especially the central phases of the approach to the research field and the interpretation work.
New accesses to further education and work by making up balances of competence? First answers from Europe and Germany Several developing practices of acquisition, evaluation and documentation of informal and formal competences are presented. In a second step the several practices are structured and the model of the bilans des competences from France and a German adaption is explained.
Although adult educators are inevitably confronted with ethical problems in their work, they have not yet developed a code of professional ethics to guide them and justify their actions both to themselves and others. One possible strategy to intensify the discourse on professional ethics, the author suggests, may be to interlink the debates on professional ethics and professionalisation.

The authors explain their model of transferring self-directed learning elements from the context of projects to their daily work as adult education teachers in the Volkshochschule des Landkreises Gießen (adult education school). They focus on usability and investigate the learners' view on self-directed learning. Their results: If resources are used wisely, the implementation of self-directed learning is possible and learners appreciate it.
How can the performances of continuing education become more influential in the German Qualification Framework (DQR)? Analysing the Course of Processes in Counselling – A Desideratum Reasoning and Development of a Research Design Different processes of counselling have been a non-studied field of research in adult education so far. It is necessary for the professionalization of counselling to close this research gap by an empirical basic work, because the need for counselling is increasing. A research design is explained by this article. The methodological outline will be developed and reasoned.
