The Gutenberg era is coming to an end. Caused by the expansion of digital media and progressing networking opportunities, another technical revolution after the invention of the printing press is forthcoming – "the secondary orality". The author points out the effects on both publishers and the entire academic and learning culture.
Emil Adolph Roßmäßler kann als erster freier Dozent der Erwachsenenbildung gelten. Anfang der 1860er Jahre war er Mitgründer des Leipziger Arbeiterbildungsvereins und ein entschiedener Kritiker Ferdinand Lassalles. Für ihn war die Natur der Schlüssel von Emanzipation. Politisch-kulturell vermisste E. A. Roßmäßler insbesondere einen in der Selbstachtung begründeten Freiheitsbegriff in Deutschland.
Die Universitätsausdehnungsbewegung war Teil einer länger andauernden Universitätsreform sowie des Bildungswesen allgemein. Zwei Drittel der Teilnehmenden waren dabei Frauen. Insbesondere für die Lehrerbildung spielten diese Angebote eine entscheidende Rolle. Die hohen Kosten für die Kurse führten dazu, dass die Angebote stark von den Mittelklassen besucht wurden. Die beliebtesten Vorlesungs-Themen waren: Social studies, industrial and political history and economics.
Ludo Moritz Hartmann begründete ein Konzept der Volksbildung, bei dem die Schlagworte "Denkfähigkeit" und "Integration allgemeiner und beruflicher Weiterbildung" im Fokus standen. Er wurde zudem Leiter der universitären Volksbildungskommission und gründete ab 1900 fünf Volkshochschulen in Wien. Des Weiteren war er als Lehrender, Publizist und Funktionär in der Volksbildung aktiv.
