To promote intercultural opening as a key process for improving the participatory chances in continuing education for people with a background of migration, their current opportunies and boundaries need to be taken into particular consideration. Several basic arguments are discussed in this report.
During the last two decades, widening adult participation in higher education has become a central issue in international and especially European lifelong learning policy debates. At European level this is reflected in the Europe 2020 strategy set out by the European Commission. One headline target is to boost the share of the population aged 30–34 that has completed tertiary or equivalent education to 40 per cent by 2020. In the face of general trends such as the intensive use of ICT, the evol…
In adult education as well as in social work voluntariness is regarded as a desirable – if not paramount – characteristic in the process of counselling. Therefore it should also be a fundamental part in the planning, performing and reflection of consultation. Thus professional counsellors need appropriate reflection templates and models in this regard. However, the discussion lacks a precise concept of voluntariness in the process of counselling. Challenges of the Bologna process. New graduations (B.A./M.A.) and the traditional university The contribution enquires for the relation between new B.A./M.A. graduations and the system of traditional universities, which in Germany is closely connected with the name Wilhelm von Humboldt. Because the university has always been having an education function, today’s reform could by all means be legitimised by the classic idea of university. After a brief outline of the Bologna process and under c…

Lifelong Learning, being one of the key issues of the Bologna Process, aims at horizontal and vertical permeability of interdependent education systems in order to be accessible to many target groups. Hence, the recognition and crediting of qualifications achieved outside of the academic realm has become increasingly more important. Despite numerous efforts within the past 10 years national standards regarding this issue are not sufficiently developed at this point. The comparison of the dif…
