An Austrian study analysed the situation of staff with a migration history within the field of adult education. This article examines barriers and enabling conditions concerning the access to the profession and asks for the use of potential of migration biographies for activities in adult education – considering the part of professionals as well as institutions.

The article presents a number of photographs of the Franz Pöggeler estate, which is preserved in the archive of the German Institute of Adult Education. The historic pictures vary between ecclesiastic-monumental architectural photography and simple snap shots and illustrate the differences of learning and teaching arrangements in the history of adult education centres. The term “multiple literacy“ is up-to-date. Taking up the history of the term, we are attempting to contribute to a clarification. The relation of writing and reasoning on the one hand, and writing and society on the other is disputable. On that score, we are tracing the discussion and putting the concept of “legitimate literacy” up for debate.
The article is based on the assumption that there is a dialectical correlation between biography and society. The authors develop an analytical category to better conceptually capture the influence of education policy frameworks through individuals’ professional performance. The main focus will be on the life stories of two figures which are pivotal for the development of the Hessian or even German history of adult education: Walter Korn and Rudi Rohlmann.
