Die Inhalte der einzelnen Studieneinheiten orientierten sich an den wichtigsten Tätigkeitsbereichen von hauptberuflichen pädagogischen MitarbeiterInnen an Volkshochschulen: Programmplanung einerseits und Lehren und Lernen mit Erwachsenen andererseits. Berücksichtigt werden darüber hinaus der gesellschaftliche Bedingungsrahmen von Erwachsenenbildung sowie organisatorische und institutionelle Probleme. Die Reihe wurde 1995 von den "Studientexten für Erwachsenenbildung" abgelöst.

For 30 years, the author has been director of the communal adult education institute “Volkshochschule” at a middle-size town in Southern Germany. In 1998, the costs of 3 million DM were financed jointly by the town (50%), the participants of the courses (40%) and the Land Baden-Württemberg (10%). In the next three years, the "Volkshochschule" has to reduce the communal subsidy by 12%. This article regards the publication of a text-foto-volume on the 100-year-history of the German Volkshochschule as an impulse for a possible innovation of writing history of adult education. First, the methodological principles of a both empirical and narrative historiography and its terminology will be described. Die Statistik der deutschen Volkshochschulen wird seit 1962 jährlich vom DIE erstellt. Im Berichtsjahr 2024 liegen bei einer Ausschöpfungsquote von rund 99 Prozent Daten für 821 der insgesamt 827 Volkshochschulen vor. Die Datenerhebung umfasst institutionelle Aspekte, Personal, Finanzierung, das realisierte Veranstaltungsangebot und weitere Leistungen der Volkshochschulen.
