Die konstruktivistische Erkenntnis, dass der "lernende Erwachsene" ein Konstrukt bleiben muss, die Tatsache, dass empirisches Wissen über Teilnahme und Nicht-Teilnahme an Weiterbildung zu gering ist und viele Aspekte mehr rücken die Teilnehmenden in das Zentrum des Interesses. Diese Ausgabe der Zeitschrift REPORT greift das Thema aus der Perspektive wissenschaftlicher Zugänge auf und nimmt gleichzeitig Empirie und Theorie in den Blick.
Schwerpunktthema ist die Vermittlung von Wissenschaft und Praxis der Erwachsenenbildung. Dabei gibt es besondere Schwierigkeiten, die vor allem daraus resultieren, dass die Wissenschaft von der Erwachsenenbildung noch sehr jung ist, dass der Kernbereich erwachsenenpädagogischer Praxis undeutlich ist und dass Erwachsenenbildung bei steigender gesellschaftlicher Relevanz in föderalen und subsidiären Prozessen verbleibt. Was nahe liegt, muss nicht selbstverständlich sein. Für die Erwachsenenbildung ist keineswegs evident, was eigentlich den Erwachsenen konturiert, der sie konstituiert. Zur vertieften Klärung dieses bislang übersehenen und doch fundamentalen Themas gibt es keinen besseren Anlass als das Jubiläum zum 20-jährigen Erscheinen einer Zeitschrift, die die Bildung der Erwachsenen im Namen führt.
